Adverse Accreditation Actions

Adverse actions are taken when a program is sufficiently out of compliance with CAHSM Accreditation Standards to the extent that the quality of the educational experience is jeopardized.

  • Accreditation Withdrawn: Accreditation may be involuntarily withdrawn if a program fails to resolve issues following a period of Show Cause or Administrative Probation. Final statuses of Accreditation Withdrawn are formally published on the CAHSM website. Students enrolled in a program at the exact time of this action will still be considered graduates of an accredited program, but those enrolling after the withdrawal date will not.
  • Accreditation Withheld: This adverse status applies to programs in the Candidacy stage that fail to meet the required Standards for Initial Accreditation to a degree that delivery of a quality program is not possible

Show Cause

Show Cause is a serious formal action taken by an Accreditation Council. It requires an accredited program to provide specific evidence explaining why its accreditation should not be withdrawn following non-corrected concerns regarding Standards or CAHSM procedures. This action is typically initiated when deficiencies are deemed to jeopardize the educational experiences offered to students.

Administrative Probationary Accreditation

This is an administrative action that occurs when an accredited program fails to meet specific organizational requirements for maintaining its status. Unlike adverse actions based on educational Standards, Administrative Probation is not subject to appeal.

A program may be placed on Administrative Probation for the following reasons:

  • Failure to submit the Annual Program Assessment Report (APAR) or other required reports by the determined date.
  • Refusal to agree to a Site Visit.
  • Failure to inform CAHSM of substantive changes within 30 days.
  • Non-payment of required CAHSM fees.
  • During a period of Administrative Probation, programs continue to be recognized as accredited in the official directory. However, failure to resolve these administrative issues within a designated timeframe will result in a recommendation for involuntary withdrawal of accreditation to the Board of Directors.
